Science at Work in Healthcare Post-16 science education pack

Welcome to the Science at Work in Healthcare post-16 science education pack.

The application of science in healthcare is fast moving and exciting.  Practitioners throughout the NHS work across a wide range of scientific areas spanning physics, chemistry and biology.  This pack has been designed to allow you to bring some of that excitement and context into your own labs.

To produce this resource we have brought together healthcare professionals from the NHS South Central region, practising teachers and specialist education authors.  The result is a set of eight innovative, practically based and engaging lesson plans set in a healthcare context.  Here are some examples of what the pack will allow your students to do:

  • Chemistry – create synthetic kidney stones and then use genuine NHS procedures to analyse their composition
  • Physics – build a laser communication system and consider how it might be used in a remote surgery application
  • Biology – investigate liver function by examining levels of bilirubin in synthetic blood serum samples

This pack provides you with lesson plans and all necessary supporting resources as well as a range of professional profiles which reflect the experiences of people who actually work in some of the job roles referenced in the pack.
