Muscles and Bones

Students build their own elbow joint and    simulate an injury such as a torn ligament. They then investigate the way such an injury would be treated and the roles of the various healthcare professionals involved in the programme of treatment.

Students consider the main differences between viruses and bacteria and make their own models.  They then consider the role of the microbiologist in identifying different bacteria and viruses and build their own    dichotomous key for identifying bacteria and viruses.

Break a Leg

Students consider the methods that can be used for ‘seeing’ inside the body without having to cut it open.  The lesson centres around a patient journey relating to Brian, who has   suffered a leg injury.  Students are given access to simulated images from different types of scanner and have to make treatment decisions about what they see.

Outbreak

Students take on the role of a team of  microbiologists.  Their task is to identify a treatment for a newly isolated bacterial disease. This activity involves culturing live bacteria. This lesson can be extended to create a whole school activity simulating the spread of an infectious disease.
